Îles Flottantes Manuel d’Installation

Dimensions

 Planting:

Pre-planting off site:

  1. create a temporary basin with a water level of ±4”; length variable and width: 4ft
  2. cut the floating mat (Repotex) to the length of the basin and place into basin
  3. cover the Repotex mats with coir fiber mats
  4. plant with indigenous plants in the ratio of 1 plant per square foot

 Planting directly on site:

  1. cut the Repotex floating mat to size
  2. float it into the basin
  3. cover the Repotex with the coir fiber mats
  4. plant with indigenous plants in the ratio of 1 plant per square foot
  5. place pebbles on the mats to make sure the plant roots have sufficient contact with the water (as the plants grow they gain weight and you can remove the pebbles)

Attach the islands by the loops

Installation

Attach the individual floating islands together, using 8″ tie wraps as seen in the image to the right.
Prepare rock anchors or concrete block anchors. If you use only one, the wind will make the islands swivel around the anchoring point; if you want to keep them in a fixed location, use 2 or four anchor points.

rockanchor

stone anchor

Attach a rope to one corner of the island and drag them by boat to their final location. Place the first anchor and attach it to one corner of the island; then go to the opposite corner, sink the anchor and attach the corresponding corner of the island. Do the remaining corners if necessary.
Do not tie the corners too tight to the anchors so that the islands can move a little; too tight anchoring ropes will drown the island corners during stronger winds.

“Predator” protection

Depending on the plants cultivated on the Floating Islands, they may fall prey to ducks who will eat the green parts of the plants and often times pull out the roots at the same time – this can be quite devastating… to protect your islands, build a net-canopy over the plants so the ducks cannot reach them. You can order the protective netting and fiberglass structure here.

notrile-netting
